Repairing Psion Organisers.

The Psion Organiser II range of computers is very compact in size, and it never ceases to amaze me how much technology the Psion designers have managed to squeeze into those little grey cases! Unfortunately, due to the amount of circuitry which is contained within the Psion case, it has to be very small and this is a major problem when an Organiser needs repairing.

Tumbling LZ.

We have been contacted by a number of users who have non-working Organisers. Some of the faults reported include:

These are just a few of the fault reports which we have received.

Should you attempt a repair?

Surface mount electronic components are used throughout the Organiser and, as such, are almost impossible to replace let alone deciding which component(s) need replacing. Take a look at the picture of the inside of the Psion LZ below:

Psion Organisers LZ PCB. This is one of two circuit boards which are sandwiched together inside a LZ, the XP is very similar in design. On the other side of this board is the key pad and display.

As can clearly be seen the electronic components are extremely tiny, these are the surface mount components. During manufacture these components are glued to the PCB (printed circuit board) then each one is soldered to make an electrical connection.

To remove and replace any of these components, let alone find a supplier for the replacement, is a major task. Also, you have to find out which of the hundreds of components is faulty before you can attempt a replacement!

So, as can be seen, it really is a fruitless task to attempt a home repair. The job is best left to the professionals and the only professionals who repair Organisers, that I know of, is Psion PLC.
